2008 Waukegan Business of the Year awarded to Matthews Employment
Good evening, Chairman Walsh, Congressman Kirk, Board of Directors, distinguished guests.
It is a great personal pleasure for me to present the Waukegan Business of the Year award to a long-time Waukegan business. This business, and it's owner are true-blue supporters of our community for almost 40 years. In fact, the company has a retiring member of the Waukegan Chamber board AND the Lake County Chamber board this year, as well as, the owner served on the Waukegan/Lake County Chamber board for many years in the 70's and 80's. It is my honor to award The 2008 Waukegan Business of the Year award to a person I've respected and admired for so many years- Chuck Matthews and Matthews Employment.
Chuck Matthews thought he was ready to retire in 1997, when he sold Matthews Employment, a firm he founded in 1969. However, he soon discovered that retirement wasn't for him and he was simply not ready to give up working.
In 2000, he teamed up with his former employees and reopened his signature business, an employment firm dedicated to providing higher quality job candidates to Lake County employers.
Matthews Professional Employment has a long history of community involvement and philanthropy, both in Waukegan and throughout the county, as well as being very generous to their employees.
Matthews will distribute over $14,000 in scholarships to 7 area high schools this year.
Construction begins this spring on Matthews Studio, the arts and crafts section of the Waukegan Library's new Children's Early Learning Center.
Their Chamber sponsorship this year alone is over $4,000 which is extremely generous for a small business.
For over 12 years, a Matthews Employment representative served on chamber boards. This is a true dedication to the business community. Chuck, your generosity and deep concern for our community is what sets you apart and above other companies- and has earned you the 2008 Waukegan Business of the Year Award- which is long overdue.
Congratulations on behalf of the Waukegan Chamber Board of Directors.
